DelVal counseling psychology students help fight child abuse
DelVal students volunteered for the Bucks County Conference on Crimes Against Children.
Doylestown, PA (06/30/2025) — In 2014, there were an estimated 702,000 cases of child maltreatment in the U.S. including 1,580 fatalities, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.
In March, Delaware Valley University counseling psychology students volunteered for the sixth annual Bucks County Conference on Crimes Against Children. The conference provided resources to professionals in the field of child abuse investigation, treatment and prevention. Close to 300 people attended the event, which was held in the University's Life Sciences Building. Attendees listened to a keynote address and participated in various workshops.
"Participating in this conference is a natural fit for our counseling psychology majors," said Dr. Allison Buskirk-Cohen, chair of the psychology department. "Our students are passionate about this field, and experiential learning is a hallmark of a DelVal education. Participating in professional conferences enhances students' education, and they bring energy and enthusiasm to the event."
DelVal student volunteers included: Jenna Bishop '17, Dominique Howard '17, Mariah La Rue '20, Caitlin O'Brien '19 and Emily Sjogren '17. The students assisted with registration, introduced speakers and facilitated conference evaluations.
Bishop was eager to return to this conference for the third year.
"This conference brings together people from many different areas, so there's a chance to hear stories from various perspectives," said Bishop. "It's really empowering to have everyone come together for an important cause."
Howard has volunteered for the conference multiple times.
"Attending this conference is always a great experience," said Howard. "I learn a lot and truly appreciate the opportunity to connect with professionals in the field."
